Preliminary Task

The purpose of the preliminary task was to get to grips with some of the basic features used in the media. It involved filming and editing  a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character. The character then exchanged dialogue about any subject. This task must show demonstration of match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180 degree rule.

I learn from the task that keeping continuity is harder then it may seem. Due to us only having one camera, it was hard to shoot the dialogue part and the shot reverse shot. We filmed one character doing all their speaking part while the other character mouth their part. Then we swapped and did the same with the other character. Secondly, I have learnt how to use the editing equipment effectively. it helped us to edit the dialogue and keep it flowing together well.

In our main task, we need to ensure we do not break the 180 degree rule. In this task we did due to use recording the shot reverse shot over the characters right shoulders. Once edited, it looked like the characters were looking in the same direction. Secondly, when we filmed a tracking shot of the character crossing the room, it did not look very fluid and was jumpy. We need to look at different ways around this next time. Finally, the dialogue needs to keep upbeat and keep the pace up. Our editing included slight gaps where the character was just sitting there and this needs to be cut out next time to keep it interesting for the audience.
